The Chinese Zodiac

Discover more about yourself according to ancient Chinese tradition

Every individual’s personality has a centered “self” and many layers around it. Each layer has a different size, texture and aura, and when combined, it makes up who the person truly is. The Chinese Zodiac or Chinese Horoscope uses details of your birth to determine your basic personality traits, strengths, weaknesses, your compatibility with other people and even to forecast your future.

Chinese Horoscopes may not have any religious basis. However, if it’s based on 5,000 years worth of human observation, similar trends can be found. It is the culmination of 5,000 years of observation by the ancient Chinese scholars to culminate into the analysis of each sign. Some are very accurate. Observation is the best way to gather information.

It is always interesting and entertaining to read about yourself, your good points and your horoscoped weaknesses. I guess knowing more about yourself will help you to work on what you need to work on. It is nice to know who you can work, partner, and be friends with… also who you would find some conflict with perhaps. Of course getting along and not getting along ultimately relies on you. But it is interesting to see who you have ‘natural’ conflicts with if no efforts were made towards the relationship. It is also interesting to share with friends personality traits of people you would like to understand more about. It is always nice to have a some lead in order to find a beginning in our relations with others.

Elements
The 5 elements – Metal, Water, Wood, Fire, Earth – are an integral part of the Chinese Zodiac which define a universal balance. Every one of us are made up of these elements and are deeply connected to them. A person’s characteristics are determined both by the ruling element of their sign as well as the element of the year of their birth.

One of factors that affects a person’s characteristics is the time of birth. E.g. A Rooster born in the hour of the Ox will have a different personality compared to a Rooster born in the hour of the Snake. The sign related to the hour of birth is called the Rising Sign, and the individual will experience the effect of the Rising Sign in various degrees.

The Chinese Lunar horoscope is different from the Western zodiac. The year you are born in isn’t the only thing taken into consideration, but also the month you were born, the time of your birth and your Western zodiac sign.

It is always interesting and entertaining to read about yourself, your good points and your horoscoped weaknesses. I guess knowing more about yourself will help you to work on what you need to work on. I thought this section on horoscopes would keep you coming back for further contemplations and it’s always interesting to find out more about others. Horoscopes should not be used as a weapon or be fixed. Whatever personalities are described of each sign has many mitigating factors and everything can be changed or overridden with patience, kindness, understanding and good old fashioned sincerity for others. Do not think whatever a horoscope says is fixed or permanent. It is a general guide to start from somewhere but don’t be stuck where it is… nothing is stagnant. For example Snakes do not get along with Boars according to the horoscopes… But they can get along if they work at it. Horoscopes help you find ahead of time what we need to be aware of with other I guess.

Do take a look below to see which animal sign you are… It will lead to interesting discussions, ideas, and introspection’s. Have fun and enjoy. I put it here for my blog friends to enjoy… so please enjoy and share with others!!!

Fuck you for this astrology some thing I don’t like is how some years the after year zodiac appear though days months 1 to 9 or 5 to 9 which that not astrology works or horoscope too and also why some Chinese zodiac lunar years are put the year after that they were born not before like when I look other websites about lunar calendar horoscope ps this needs to be fixed I am rooster rooster years are feb 9 2005 – Jan 29 2006 and don’t mix anything up by day of month on the wonky calculator that you have so change it maybe once a day instead of doing in after Chinese zodiac if you’re going make horoscope try make flow with lunar dates with signs before

The importance of the zodiac to the Chinese culture is that the animal signs have been used in stories and folklore. These developed the different personality traits that were represented by each animal.

Learning more about astrology and the zodiac signs helps us to understand people and their action. It’s always interesting to find ahead of time what we need to be aware of with our surroundings.

Thanks for the interesting sharing, the zodiac provides guidance on how people live their lives.

The Chinese zodiac is an important factor to the Chinese culture where each year is represented by one of twelve animals. In the following order where Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and comes the Pig. The signs have been used for a very long time as a way of dating years in a 12-year cycle of the Chinese calendar. The importance of the zodiac to the Chinese culture is that the animal signs have been used in stories and folklore. This calendar can be traced back to the 14th century B.C. A zodiac system has existed in Chinese culture for more than 2,000 years ago. Recording to myths the first Chinese emperor, in 2637 B.C. invented the Chinese lunar calendar. In Chinese culture, the zodiac can be used to determine our fortune for the year. Over time the zodiacs became more and more integrated into everyday life, with different meanings and characteristics assigned to each animal. Interesting article where we could learn and understand of ourselves , just by clicking those button as mentioned in the blog. There’s many information from understanding of each zodiac such as a personality, fortune, compatibility, even to forecast your future and so forth. That’s wonderful at least we could somehow know where we stand and improve our weakness point.
Thank you Rinpoche and writer team for this interesting article.

Ancient Chinese had always relied on astrology for the success of their activities. Even now, many Chinese still seek answers in astrology that sometimes it becomes overboard. No matter what the results may be, we still need to put in the effort to make it successful as nothing will come out of nothing. Thank you for this interesting post that can serve as guidance.

It’s always worth spending more time and effort to know yourself better: your strength and weakness, so to live up a better version of you. As many saying the worst enemy is always you yourself, you can’t get anywhere in life, because you keep getting in your own way. All of the troubles you are encountering arise from your own actions. Before conquer the external world, you have to master the inner world of your mind… Thank you Rinpoche and writer team for this article.

It is very interesting by just entering our birth information and it will calculate our Chinese sign, elements, protectors and etc. This Chinese Horoscopes may not have any religious basis. Anyone can try for it and look for the best solution to improve / change ourselves for better future.

  16. Stella Cheang on Feb 4, 2018 at 7:20 pm

We were very familiar with the Chinese Zodiac horoscope from young because the adults would always mention the zodiac sign of the year especially as Chinese New Year approached. It seemed, to me, the zodiac sign of the year, when collaborated with the zodiac sign of individuals, would produced different effect through out the year. It was very fascinating because it foretold surprises, as well as good and bad fortunes.

As I grew older, I realised that the Zodiac Horoscope is a combination of science, maths and human observation. By learning more about personality of each sign based on the birth year, month, day and hour, we get a glimpse of the unique characteristic of a person, perhaps someone whom we can get to know better and work closely with.

Thank you, Rinpoche and team for this fancy calculator for us to plot our Chinese Zodiac Horoscope sign with matching western horoscope as a side reference. It is interesting information.

Nothing is set in stone. Even though I was very fascinated with the zodiac and let it dictate my life and felt that it was unavoidable, I now know that nothing is permanent. As the saying goes, this too shall pass. We can purify any negative karma if we work at it and do our purification practices. So, we can read the zodiac but know that the future is in our hands. We just have to know what to do. That’s where the Guru or teacher comes in. We have to have faith and confidence in the real guru after we have checked out the Guru and work at the practices that were clearly given to us.

Horoscopes have a big influence on our life as it determine certain traits of character that influence our actions – and hence our results as well. I think everyone kind of knows this. However, what I learn from Rinpoche is that although our traits have taken some form, we can still change our fate and destiny by conscious choices and consistent effort.

So, it is good to know our stars but knowledge should not stop there but expand to learning how to work our stars to create the most beneficial results

If it’s got 5000 years of wisdom behind it, it’s something to think abut. From the Zodiac table , you can at least make calculated guesses on how to get round a business partner or how to work to a certain extent to effect a smoother more successful relationship with the partner of your choice.

If you have dharma as well, then it helps you to see when these calculated guesses and moves do not turn out according to your expectations. To see and to accept.

    Thank you Rinpoche.

This part of the blog is only available because of the hard work of H.E. Tsem Rinpoche and the E-Division Team. It is extremely fun to see how the Zodiac influences my personality. Although some of the points are inaccurate (Probably because I, myself, am quite an irregular person), most of the points are quite true to me.

There is so much hard work at play here and I must congratulate those involved as those involved in the creation of this section has created the causes to satisfy people’s thirst for information and superstition. I rejoice! A lot of merit is gained by this action.

“Tiger is the animal that represents authority. They are proud and will exert their leadership as they are born leaders. Forceful and aggressive, they are usually in the lead and it is difficult to deny them their rights. ”

This is so true! I am very aggressive. hehe. The whole page is so fun to play with. I can find out more about other chinese horoscopes with just a few clicks!

    Thank you E-Div team!! 🙂

Rinpoche has indicated that though chinese horoscopes may not have any religious basis, but it is based on 5,000 years worth of human observation by ancient chinese scholars. The culmination into the analysis of eachsign for some can be very accurate, but Rinpoche did caution that the result of such prediction should not be taken as ‘fixed’ or permanent, as nothing is permanent. Each personality sign has mitigating factors and everything can be overriden with patience, kindness, understanding and good old fashion sincerity for others. Nevertheless, just take it with a pinch of salt for fun and easy reading and enjoy it as entertainment.

This particular page on Chinese Zodiac definitely has improved signficantly as compared to my last visit. Now this page is very user friendly and whatever information that we need pertain to the Chinese Zodiac is just within a click of a button on the main page itself, be it the relationship 2 different chinese zodiac, or the relationship between the Chinese and Western Zodiac on the month that we were born.

Many thanks to the efforts from E-Division that make Chinese Zodiac fun to learn :D.

This is a very comprehensive writeup. Thank you to all involved in this effort. You must have done alot of research to be able to come up with all these information. Even navigation is easy.

Very often i refer back to this blog post after meeting someone new. It is akin to looking at the shape of the spout of a teapot and you will know how best to pour the tea without spilling it. When you know of a person’s strength and weaknesses, you will know how best to harness their strength while helping them improve their weaknesses.

Having said that, these facts are basic characteristics of people in general. Their personality and perspective changes after they receive dharma knowledge. So I would use these information wisely and not blindly.

  67. Li Kheng on Jul 11, 2012 at 6:19 pm

What I like most about this horoscope is: it gives us a general idea about our natural tendencies but it also proposes efforts we can consciously make to overcome the “weakness” we may possess. This is very typical of Tsem Rinpoche where I learn that we have the power to make a change.

I remember that Karma Chart that Tsem Rinpoche created where Rinpoche showed us that the choices we make and the action we take can cause a change to our so called destiny. For example, we can engage in purification acts like consistent daily sadhana, puja etc. to purify our negative karma (black karma). This approach to viewing karma is very empowering because we do not just say: oh, it is my karma to be lazy…it is my karma to be a failure etc. If we view karma the way Tsem Rinpoche has taught us, we can say: yes, I must have very strong imprints of laziness due to habituation from past lives. However, if I practice moral discipline and develop the new habit of being hardworking, I can collect the merits to purify my negative karma and cause the creation of positive karma.

Thank you Rinpoche for always giving us the opportunity to learn and be better.

This is such an awesome section in the blog because like it or not, we love to read about our characters and other people’s. This is not superstitions…it is ancient science which has been around for ages and practised in many cultures. It is a guideline for us to gauge and learn about ourselves and others so we can get along better or better yet induced with Dharma… to help the other person better. Perhaps if we know that particular person’s qualms and quirks… we can better serve/benefit them 😉

The blog team worked really really hard in researching and writing and creating this whole section up!!! Thank you selfless ppl. And thank you Rinpoche!

Its fantastic how horoscopes can teach people to be better, kinder, less angry, more patient etc…. what a great tool to impart good human values on others!

The writers really worked super hard on this – researching, comparing notes, writing etc… without the content, would be nothing to talk about! They did it uncomplainingly, lead by Jean Mei, who worked overtime to pull the content together. The only thing we could not write original content for is the Daily Horoscopes… I do hope someday that there will be an astrologer among us who is able to do this pro bono!

The concept of rebirth has a long association with Buddhism. Rebirth in Buddhism refers to the teaching that the actions of a sentient being lead to a new existence after death, in an endless cycle called saṃsāra. One will begins a new life in a new body that may be human, animal or spiritual depending on the moral quality of the previous life’s actions. What they are reborn as depends on their actions in their previous life rather kamma. As a Buddhist we should believe in rebirth but still many people don’t . Buddha taught us that choices of rebirth make a difference and can shape many lifetimes. Buddhists believe that nothing that exists is permanent and everything will ultimately cease to be. Against the odds two inspiring nuns fought all the way to become ordained, fighting for their rights to practice Buddhism . Interesting read of how they went through , bringing equality for women in Thailand. Buddhism is the predominant religion in Thailand. Officially, only men can become monks and novices in Thailand under a Buddhist order. The country does not recognize female monks or novices. In recent years, more Thai Buddhist women seeking to become full-fledged female monks, have been defying the tradition getting ordained overseas, in Sri Lanka or India. Buddhist women have been fighting for years for equality and social acceptance in Thailand. They just can’t be ordained by Thai monks. Ven. Dhammananda, 68 year old former university lecturer and activist became Thailand’s first Theravadin bhikkhuni after going the odds. Inspiring read biography on Ven. Dhammananda and Ven. Dr. Lee. They had gone through great hardships, discrimination and against the many odds in bringing equality to women in Buddhism in Thailand.

The unseen things are spiritual realities that are eternal and invisible to our physical eye. There are many forces and phenomena that are not visible to the naked eye. There are many things that humans cannot see yet there are some could see. For what is can be seen is only. Things do exist even we can’t see, believing their existence is our choice. Things that we can’t see in the world opens up a curiosity and exploration by some. Whether through scientific inquiry, or spiritual exploration, the pursuit of knowledge about the unseen can lead to profound insights about ourselves and the universe.
Malacca City is the historic capital of the coastal state of Malacca, in Malaysia serving as a link between east and west for over 500 years. Famous for breath-taking sights with rich heritage, ancient dark culture and history with many old centuries buildings with an interesting past and a colourful ghost story. For that reason alone it is worth visiting as is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site owing to its well-preserved historical center. There’s many historical mansions been passed down generation to generations and with many ghostly sighting by the locals and visitors. There’s the reason many unseen beings loitering and attached to these places. Such an interesting and incredibly creepy watching the video in this blog host by Li Kim. Li Kim had done a great work all along with her team to share with readers about our historic Malacca .

Vajrayogini symbolizes the wisdom of all enlightened beings and embodies the impulse of inspiration that drives the Buddhas to attain the perfect enlightenment. Vajrayogini is one of the most effective practices for people today. We can make offerings such as gold or jewel offerings and so on. The offering of gold helps us to collect merits, spiritual attainments, gain a deeper connection to Vajrayogini. It also creates the causes to attain a Buddha’s body.
Make Offerings to Vajrayogini in Kechara Forest Retreat at Bentong is such an meritorious way for us to collect merits. All thanks to our Guru having conceptualised the idea of having a statue of Vajrayogini for everyone . Recitation of Vajrayogini mantra can be a powerful tool for self-transformation, healing and liberation from samsara.

Thank you, Rinpoche for sharing this insightful article. Life is short, and if we enjoy every moment of every day, then we will be happy no matter what happens or what changes along the way. What ever matter to us at the time of death is nothing. In the end, it’s not the years in our life that count it’s what you leave behind that matters. A great soul never dies. It brings us together again and again.Death is the golden key that opens the palace of eternity. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time. Learning Dharma and practicing dharma is the our choice that’s matter. Some of the key points to take notes, read, study the Lam Rim and apply it, engage in Sadhana daily and consistently. No one will help us at the moment of death but ourselves. Spiritual practicing is the best choice.

Well the size of Buddha statues in Tibetan Buddhism is important because it represents the Buddha’s immense ability and vast knowledge. Hence the Buddha statues hold the symbol of satisfaction within, peace and happiness. They are a symbol of inspiration for every human being. When we focus on the Buddha statues, it gives us inner peace that our mind, our heart and our soul gets enlightened.
We have are so fortunate seeing and circumambulating where the 9-foot Dorje Shugden statue and with 500 mantra stones engraved with Dorje Shugden’s sacred mantra. As Rinpoche had said before the bigger and more Buddha statues helps in planting seeds of enlightenment in people’s mind-streams. It also help us to generate as much merit and purify as much karma as possible. Merely by seeing all those big statues at Kechara Forest Retreat is a blessing.
    Thank you Rinpoche.

The 4th Tagpu Pemavajra Jampel Tenpai Ngodrub, most commonly known as Tagpu Dorje Chang, was a highly accomplished yogi Highly attained lama who had many authentic visions of the Buddhas and even travel astrally to receive direct teachings from them. His recognised line of incarnations stem all the way back to the 14th Century. He is generally regarded as such amongst Gelug lineage holders. He spent most of his time in a hermitage located above Sera Monastery, gave teachings and transmitted many vital practices and lineages to his foremost student Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche. Besides receiving the complete instructions of Dorje Shugden’s practice, Tagpu Dorje Chang had many other mystical experiences throughout his lifetime. Interesting read biography of a highly accomplished mahasiddha lama.

n Tibetan culture, it is a popular and customary practice for families to invite monks to perform spiritual ceremonies such as Trusol rituals. The monks have had the opportunity to offer such ceremonies for individuals or their families. Such ceremonies purify the elements of the environment which helps those living or visiting there to experience good health, success and well-being. The sacred ritual of ‘bathing’ the Buddhas and consecration through which negativities, sicknesses and obstacles will be cleared. Where by filling those areas with positive energies and good vibes through this Trusol consecration puja. Water is an essential part of this puja and symbolises the cleansing of all negativities and impurities. Through this puja it also pacifies local deities and other unseen beings in the surrounding areas. We are indeed fortunate that Tsem Rinpoche has taught Kecharians this practice and it has benefited many.

Reading this post had me gain some knowledge of Shifter Werewolves. Any article regarding rare creatures or paranormal articles are of my interest since young. In European folklore, a werewolf is a man who turns into a wolf at night and devours animals, people, or corpses but returns to human form by day. They have the ability to transform from an ordinary human appearance to a partially-lupine form with pointed ears, mutton chops, claws and fangs, and a ridged brow . Wow… werewolf tends to be vicious and unable to control his blood thirst. Their underlying common origin can be traced back to Proto-Indo-European mythology. In many depictions, these bloodthirsty beasts are evil where they kill animals and innocent people. They are humans who transition into wolf-like creatures, after being placed under a curse. In folklore, most werewolves originate from being cursed or bitten by another werewolf. That’s what they do believe. According many enthusiasts, there’s many different type of werewolves such as Alpha wolves, Beta wolves , Deltas, Elders, some survive as loners while others move in packs. How true it is no one knows. I do believe their existing . Many interesting stories related to these wolves in the past history.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

Beautiful Dorje Shugden at Malacca. One should pay a visit there, located at a busy tourist place. It was such an auspicious occasion that a grand Puja was held there. Dedicated students and volunteers were there getting the place ready for the grand puja. Well the Grand Dorje Shugden puja was conducted by very own Kechara puja team to commemorate the chapel’s 3rd anniversary. Many people attended the Puja that’s wonderful to receive the powerful Protector Dorje Shugden blessings. More people will make a connection and get to know Manjushri, the Buddha of Wisdom, in the form of a Dharma Protector. May Dorje Shugden’s practice flourish to benefit those tourists and locals.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

Venerable Geshe Rabten Rinpoche is a highly realised meditation master known as a debater, scholar, and meditation master, was the first Tibetan Buddhist master to introduce the complete Vinaya-tradition. He had also introduce the study of the five major topics of Buddhism to the West. He became the ‘path breaker’ of the complete and complex teachings of Buddhism in the West. Many masters, who are famous in the West today, were Geshe’s students. enerable Geshe Rabten. Geshe Rabten wrote the beautiful and Manjushri’s prayer called Gangloma and gave a profound explanation. We are so fortunate to learn about this Manjushri’s sacred prayer. May all be blessed by the practice of Lord Manjushri and Geshe Rabten’s explanation.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

The begging bowl or alms bowl is one of the simplest but most important objects in the daily lives of Theravada Buddhist monks. The alms bowl still stands as an emblem of how all Buddhas, as numerous as grains of sand in the Ganges, practiced to end their desire. All those who receive the alms bowl should focus their mind to act with self-control and self-respect. Almsgiving is a tradition of Theravada Buddhists, majority in Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Laos. In those early days of Buddhism, monks would take their bowls and go out begging for food. As today in Thailand one could see monks woke up before dawn every morning and carried his bowl through the roads or paths wherever he was staying. Local people would place food in the bowl as a donation, through the generosity of lay people. They accept whatever food is offered for them and eat whatever been given, serve as a blessing for the giver.
One bowl has held the food of a thousand families. A solitary monastic travels on his journey of a hundred thousand miles seeking liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
Thank you H.E. Tsem Rinpoche for explaining the meaning of begging and gave us more reasons to be vegetarian . Create a awareness among us not killing animals to be one.

Ajahn Siripanyo, the son of billionaire Ananda Krishnan, chose to abandon his inheritance and become a Buddhist monk in pursuit of spirituality. A Thai-Malaysian monk born in London and educated in UK. He was ordained in Thailand and lived there, leaving behind a life of immense wealth and privilege. He did surprised many and his choice was unexpected. Initially as a temporary measure, but somehow later evolved into a permanent way of life. Ven. Ajahn Siripanyo is now the Abbot of hermitage Dtao Dam on the Thai-Burmese border in Saiyok National Park, Thailand.
He was in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia years back giving an enthralling Dhamma talk on the timeless teachings of Ajahn Chah.
Thank you Rinpoche for this inspiring sharing.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
